Manchester Airport Information

The airport opened in 1928 following various short lived aerodrome developments in early years from 1910 to 1919. These early aerodromes handled increasing air traffic from scheduled flights to London, South Shore at Blackpool via Birkdale Sands on the outskirts of Southport.

In 1929 Rackhouse in Wythenshawe opened as Manchester's first municipal airfield. The location was terrible the ground soon became waterlogged and heavier planes had to be diverted to other airfields. A new location was urgently needed.

A new site was found south west of the city at Ringwood. The airfield also housed aircraft manufacturer Fairey Aviation. The airfield became famous during the Second World War as an RAF base as well as a location for Britain's Airborne Para Training facility. The prototype for the Lancaster Bomber made its first test flight from the Airbase.

After the war the civil aviation business started to flourish. The Para training school buildings where converted to handle civil passengers and in the late 1950's the runways where extended to handle the larger commercial airlines.

By the early 1980's the airport was designated for international long-haul flights to American and Asia. A second terminal was constructed with supporting train and motorway links increasing the airport's catchment area.

The airport has three terminals and is the 12th busiest airport within Europe.

In 1988 Manchester International Airport celebrated its Golden Jubilee.
In 2006 Lufthansa celebrates 50 years of flights from Manchester Airport.
