London Luton International Airport Information
The airport started life as an aerodrome opened in 1938 as the Luton Municipal Airport by the Rt Hon. Kingsley Wood, Secretary of State Air. With the onset of the Second World War the airport was still used for commercial flights as well as a base for 264 Fighter Squadron and was an important site for the Percival Aircraft Company, to enable the development and manufacture of the balsa wood wonder, the Mosquito fighter bomber, which was build under licence from the De Havilland Aircraft Company.
At the end of the war in 1952 the airport was redeveloped complete with a new control tower. The airports passenger numbers increased dramatically with the advent of cheap package holidays to Spain and other European destinations in the early 1960s. In 1962, the newly formed Euravia, opened the doors to UK cheap travel. Two years later the airline changed the name to Britannia Airways. Britannia Airways was successful and reformed itself in 2004 into Thomsonfly.
As Britannia Airways was growing using Luton, Monarch Airlines also establish a base at Luton. Real growth began in 1986 when Monarch Crown Service created by Monarch Airlines started to run scheduled flights to Spain and Ryanair a new airline offered flights to Ireland. Luton was fast becoming an international airport and changed its name accordingly to "Luton International Airport."
More growth came in the early 90's when Ryanair began to offer cheap scheduled flights to Europe and other no thrills airlines such as EasyJet followed suit in the mid 90's.
This all helped boost passenger numbers and made Luton airport the fastest growing airport measured in both flight and passenger numbers over the last 20 years.
