Much of the South West is known as the West Country, an informal term which sometimes excludes Wiltshire and Gloucestershire. Cornwall is the southernmost county in the UK and often experiences the warmest weather, making it popular with holidaymakers. Cornwall has emerged as a hotspot for surfers and the popular towns of Newquay and Bude experience high numbers of traffic each year for this reason. Another thing Cornwall has become known for is the Cornish Pasty, a savoury pastry fillet with beef steak, onion and potato. Other popular Cornish food includes Cornish fudge, Cornish clotted cream and Cornish ice cream.

Devon, also sometimes referred to as Devonshire, famous for its Jurassic coastline which is England’s only natural UNESCO World Heritage Site. The cities of Plymouth and Exeter and the largest in the county with the majority of the remaining area made up of small seaside and rural towns. Dorset is similar in many ways to Devon and is also a popular tourist destination. Dorset too boasts a Jurassic coastline which includes Lulworth Cove, Chesil Beach and Durdle Door. Visitors to these areas can expect to find many fossils and rock formations in the cliffs and scattered across the sandy beaches. Lyme Regis and Swanage are successful tourist seaside resorts which attract attention from across the world.

Situated inland, Wiltshire offers a contrast to the coastal counties in the South West and is made up of a mostly rural landscape. Two thirds of Wiltshire is comprised of chalk which accounts for many scenic landscape features and man-made efforts such as the Cherhill White Horse. The only city in Wiltshire is Salisbury which houses a cathedral and several museums, stately homes and gardens in the surrounding area. Perhaps the most visited attraction in Wiltshire, if not the whole South West region, is Stonehenge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising of ancient stone monuments thought to be erected between 3,000 and 1,600 BC.
