Motorhome Hire Northern Ireland
Northern Ireland is the smallest country in the UK and is home to only approximately 3% of the population. To the south and west, Northern Ireland shares a border with the Republic of Ireland.
The capital and largest city in Northern Ireland is Belfast. Belfast is home to the Ulster Orchestra and the oldest English language newspaper which remains in publication: The News Letter. Sports fans can enjoy watching the Belfast Giants ice hockey team at their stadium, Odyssey Arena. There are plenty of historic attractions in Belfast, including Belfast Castle, The Titanic’s Dock and The Grand Opera House. Other attractions include Belfast Zoo, the W5 Interactive Science Centre and Armagh Planetarium.
Derry, or Londonderry as it is often referred to, is the only intact walled city in Ireland and one of the best examples in Europe. Steeped in Irish history, Derry was the site of the siege of Derry in the 17th century and Bloody Sunday in 1972. Known most for its fine architecture, Derry and offers a host of Georgian, Edwardian and Victorian buildings. Some of these include St Columb’s Cathedral, Bishop Street Courthouse and St Eugene’s Cathedral.
A major geographical feature of Northern Ireland is Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in the UK. Lough Neagh provides a tranquil environment with plenty of secluded bays and scenic viewpoints for relaxation and contemplation. Bird watchers flock to Lough Neagh during the winter and summer months to witness wildfowl which migrates from countries such as Iceland, Canada and the Russian Arctic. There are a host of activities to try in and around the lake, such as boating, scuba diving, cycling and clay pigeon shooting.
Another of Northern Ireland’s famous geographical features is the Sperrin Mountain range. There are plenty of opportunities to witness birds of prey such as sparrow hawks, kestrels and buzzards as well as walking, hiking and mountain climbing opportunities. The two largest peaks in the Sperrins are Sawel Mountain and Dart Mountain, both of which can be climbed in one day.
Perhaps Northern Ireland’s most infamous landmark, the Giant’s Causeway is a World Heritage sire which attracts high visitor numbers throughout the year. A National Trust site, the Giant’s Causeway is comprised of 15 miles of coastal footpath and an area of interlocking basalt columns. Some of the smaller basalt boulders are the Honeycomb, the Giant’s Harp, the Camel’s Hump and the Shepherd’s Steps. A complementary interpretative centre can be found nearby which explains the history and geology of the Causeway and provides additional excitement for many visitors as well as facilities including a restaurant. Many tourists find the Causeway astonishing to witness and explore.
