How much are UK Fuel prices?

UK fuel prices vary depending on region and fluctuate regularly. A third part site such as Petrolprices.com can provide up to date information. Most motorhomes use Diesel fuel. Please ensure that you fill up your motorhome with the correct fuel before driving away from a petrol station. As a rough guide motorhomes can expect to do 25-30mpg depending on size, weight and travel conditions.

Octane numbers

Petrol is measured using an octane rating. This is the fuels ability to resist engine knocking. Knocking occurs when the fuel mixes with air and explodes in the cylinder in a controlled explosion inside the vehicle engine. If fuel has a higher octane rating it will have a higher resistance to engine knocking.

There a three numbers shown at garages for fuel.

RON- Research Octane Number is measured under simple test conditions.

MON- Petrol's Motor Octane Number is measured under more controlled test conditions and at a higher engine speed and temperature.

The average value for both RON and MON is what is considered the actual road driving value called Road Octane Number. In many European countries the Research Octane Number (RON) is displayed at the petrol pump.

Diesel ignites and burns when it is compressed to release a great deal of energy at very high pressure in the engine cylinder. Diesel literally automatically ignites when compressed in the engine and combusts to 20 times the original space and pressure after combustion.

Bio-Diesel is more environmentally friendly Diesel. The fuel is made from renewable energy sources such as sugar beet, rape seed oil and sun flower oil. Bio-Fueled vehicles have a lower carbon footprint and release any toxic gases into the environment.
Please check that your vehicle can take Bio-Diesel fuel before filling up at the garage pump.

Leaded Four Star petrol has been removed from all UK major forecourts on the 1st January 2000.

Common UK forecourt petrol fuels include:
Ordinary unleaded - 95 RON
Super unleaded - 98 RON
Leaded Four Star - 98 RON

  5. Keep campfires small to minimize the amount of ash and pollution. Don't put anything into the fire pit that will not burn, such as plastics, foils, and metals. Observe fire rules, which may change each day with weather conditions.
  6. Use non-toxic cleaning supplies and tank additives.
  7. Your favorite music may be your neighbor's noise pollution. Observe motorhome quiet hours for generators, boom boxes, and noisy games.
  8. Where pets are permitted, keep them indoors or use a screw-in stake. Tying them to trees can damage fragile bark.
  9. Work with nature. In hot weather, use natural shade, awnings and canvas covers. In cold weather, park where the motorhome will be protected from northerly winds.
  10. At the end of your trip, dispose of all rubbish properly.
  11. Leave campground showers, the dump station, and the campsite as clean as you found them.

Observing these simple greener motorhoming guidelines will help make you a Green motorhome user!
