Octane numbers
Petrol is measured using an octane rating. This is the fuels ability to resist engine knocking. Knocking occurs when the fuel mixes with air and explodes in the cylinder in a controlled explosion inside the vehicle engine. If fuel has a higher octane rating it will have a higher resistance to engine knocking.
There a three numbers shown at garages for fuel.
RON- Research Octane Number is measured under simple test conditions.
MON- Petrol's Motor Octane Number is measured under more controlled test conditions and at a higher engine speed and temperature.
The average value for both RON and MON is what is considered the actual road driving value called Road Octane Number. In many European countries the Research Octane Number (RON) is displayed at the petrol pump.
Diesel ignites and burns when it is compressed to release a great deal of energy at very high pressure in the engine cylinder. Diesel literally automatically ignites when compressed in the engine and combusts to 20 times the original space and pressure after combustion.
Bio-Diesel is more environmentally friendly Diesel. The fuel is made from renewable energy sources such as sugar beet, rape seed oil and sun flower oil. Bio-Fueled vehicles have a lower carbon footprint and release any toxic gases into the environment. Please check that your vehicle can take Bio-Diesel fuel before filling up at the garage pump.
