Exeter Airport History

The Airport was developed from a grass airfield base in 1937, by Exeter airplane enthusiasts.

During the Second World War the base had a varied use as a fighter base then base for the following operational squadrons: No 213; No 87 and No 601.

RAF Exeter was used during D-Day by the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) Ninth Air Force as a troop transport base using Douglas C-47 Skytrain transporters for the 101st Airborne Division. It was then known as USAAF Station 463. They famously dropped paratroops near Carentan to help with the Normandy beachhead.

After the war the base was used by Walruses of the RAF air-sea rescue squadrons.

The Exeter base was given back to civil use in 1947, but still used as a reserve RAF base until the 1950s. In 1952 scheduled flights from Exeter Airport were offered to the Channel Islands and more locations followed. Following a new terminal opening with runway extension establishing Exeter as an important international airport in the West Country of England.
