In the Second World War fighter command used the base for Vickers Supermarine Spitfire.
In 1956 the runway and terminal where both extended.
In 1971 the British Airports Authority (BAA) took ownership of the airport.
By the 1980s the airport was offering main international flights to Amsterdam, Ireland Dublin, France and Germany.
In 2006 a terminal extension was opened offering more gates and better facilities.
Today, Edinburgh airport has one terminal which serves 30 different airlines flying to a number of destinations and is the seventh largest UK airport. It is 8 miles west of the city centre.
The only international services from Edinburgh during the 1980s were to Amsterdam and Dublin, but in the following years links were opened to destinations in France and Germany.
